How to Use Google Tools to Improve Your Search
So you are searching for something. It might be a photograph. It might be a film. It might be information, a new pair of jeans, or a document for your English essay. You, obviously, go to Google first. You type in your search, let’s say ‘Dogs in Costumes’, and hit enter. Right away you’ve got five million hits. But where do you begin?
Before you get overcome and give up, or just start clicking haphazardly, take a minute. What, precisely, are you looking for? Do you want to post a comical picture to your Facebook account? Do you want to watch a movie of a dog at a wedding? Do you want a Halloween costume for your dog to wear? Whatever it is you’re looking for, Google has tools to make it stress-free.
When you search with Google, have you ever noted the bar at the top left of the page? The one that initially has the word Web highlighted? Found it? Okay, now here comes the fun part. The first tab after Web is Images. Click on Images if you want photographs or cartoons of the dog. Not what you want? Try the next tab- Videos. Here you get YouTube, Hulu and other film sources from across the web. Not thrilled by the slobbering bulldog? Okay, carry on to the next tab. Maps will display the nearest dog apparel stores, News will give you information about the next dog show, and Shopping will search the web, looking for that perfect doggie costume.
Oh, wait a minute; your thesis is on human behavior as it relates to canines? And you need some good citations? Go for the pull-down menu. By clicking on the More tab, you’ll get a glut of other tools. There you are- Scholar! Here you’ll discover where dogs in costumes have been debated in science articles, cited by doctors, and studied by psychologists. You can also search for blogs dedicated entirely to dogs in costumes with the Blog tab. Or learn how much the average person spends on a doggie costume with the Finance tab.
Any way you approach it, the simple tab bar at the top of Google’s search page is an unlimited way to improve your search. Knowing what you’re looking for is the tough part. Finding it with Google is easy.
